Research For Music Video: Review On Previous Student

The video above is a remake of Heaven by Emelie Sande.

On the whole I do think this video is a strong remake and has conformed to the conventions of pop videos. The artist regularly looks into the camera and is the main focus of the video as she is the only person featuring in it. The artist comes across as very confident and gives a strong performance throughout the video. There is also a good variation in locations to avoid the video becoming static.

There is only one use of a base track that appears in the video which is where the artist is sitting down on the ground, dressed in all black. The editing of the video is also done well as it has been edited to the beat which often happens in pop music videos. Once again this helps to avoid the video from becoming static and helps the video to flow better.

Base Track.

As well as its strengths this video also has its weaknesses for example there is one shot which doesn't really seem to fit in with the video e.g (below)

We don't see this girl in the rest of the video and therefore she doesn't seem to fit with the video very well.

Although it is not clear whether it is a technical fault or intended, a few times during the video the screen goes black. The doesn't go well with the rest of the locations and isn't something that runs throughout so once again it seems very out of place and disrupts the flow of the video.

The video relates to Goodwin's theory of disjuncture as there is little connection between the songs lyrics and the lyrics. However the are parts of the video where the artist is standing infront of a bright light, which may connote to heaven, which is what the artist sings about in the song.

Connotations of heaven with the bright light.
